MY HABITAT, MY HOME

Materials:

Student Activity Sheets
Crayons
Paper
Glue

Objectives: Students will be able to:

1. Name the four components of a habitat: food, water, shelter, space
2. Put animals from Beneath the Ocean Blue in their habitat
3. Design a habitat for themselves

Background: A habitat is the place where an animal or plant usually lives. Plants and animals are adapted to particular habitats and many plants and animals cannot survive without the correct habitat. A habitat must always supply food, water, shelter, and space to the plants and animals.

Procedure: Discuss the word habitat with the students:

• What is a habitat? (The place where a plant or animal lives).
• What does a plant or animal need to survive? (Food, water, shelter, and space).
• What is your habitat? (Your home provides, food, water, shelter, and space for you).
• What would a whale's habitat be? (The ocean. Discuss the habitats of other animals the students are familiar with).
• The ocean and the land near the shore is a home for many creatures. Can you think of some of these creatures?

Make copies of the activity sheets. Cut out the animals. Hand out the student activity sheets and ask the students to glue each animal in its proper habitat.

Extension: Ask the students to create their own habitat. They need to draw a place with food, water, shelter, and space and draw themselves in the place.
